Our CGI U Commitment

What is CGI U?

The fifth annual Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) meeting was held March 30 – April 1, 2012 at George Washington University. It brought together students and national youth organizations to create and implement Commitments to Action across five focus areas: education, environment & climate change, peace and human rights, poverty alleviation, and public health. CGI U 2012 was arranged around plenary sessions, working sessions, and skill sessions, all of which allowed members to interact with one another and formulate commitments and productive partnerships.

What is our CGI U commitment?

Our student group will sponsor an ecological school in Indonesia called SD Kanisius Kenala. Please click on the tabs "Kenalan School Profile" and "The Challenge" to find out about the school's actual situation and challenges if you haven't done so yet.

Our student group will work with The George Washington University, American University and Kristen Dutawancara University, as well as SD Kanisius’ teachers, families and partners to raise awareness about the school's unique ecological curriculum to surrounding villages so that the School sees an increased enrollment rate of 25 percent by August 2013.

In order to raise enrollment rates our student group will help SD Kanisius Kenalan to create a promotional model that targets parents of preschool and kindergarten children from the School’s nine feeder villages.

First, we will work with the teachers and an education expert to refine and transcribe the School’s lessons into an easy-to-use handbook for teachers. Second, we will print hard copies for use in the school and post an electronic version on the School’s website. Finally, we will facilitate a promotional event, which in the first year of this model, will take the form of a book launch. The book launch will be a fun, community festival with lots of dance, music and arts - the way it is common in Indonesia, with a spotlight on the benefits of SD Kanisus Kenalan’s ecological education. It will feature workshops that draw from the School’s curriculum as well as it will feature satisfied parents’ testimonies.

Our student group members living in the United States, Alice Chan and Yvonne Chen, will engage our university communities to raise the sponsorship budget. In Indonesia, Ivan Pradipta and Laura Jenkins, will support the School community in refining, transcribing and printing the handbooks; and coordinating the book launch.

After having done it once, the School staff and students will know how to organize similar enrollment promotion festivals every year. Our student group will also facilitate a sister school partnership with a green school in the United States, which will continue to sponsor the School after this initial commitment is completed.
